BA./Business/Economics and Philosophy from Westmont College. Juris Doctorate
from Hastings College of Law.
Mark
D. Miles
Became a member of the Board of Directors at the
founding of Shelem. CEO of Crown Research Corporation, a market and economic
feasibility consultant for retirement communities and other housing. Formerly
served in management of a California Continuing Care Retirement Community serving
over 300 residents. Planning Commission Chair, City of Gresham (Portland, Oregon
metropolitan area with a population in excess of 90,000). State of Oregon Continuing
Care Retirement Community Advisory Council. Finance/Budget Citizen Advisory
Committee for Tri-Metropolitan Transit Authority District. BS/Health Care Administration
from Oregon State University; graduate studies in public administration from
California State University, Stanislaus.
Melvin
C. Miles
Became a member of the Board of Directors at the
founding of Shelem. Founder and former CEO of Crown Research Corporation, a
nationally-recognized leader in retirement community consulting. Focus group
moderator, participant and speaker in activities of state and national professional
organizations. Developed five retirement centers for Washington State Baptist
Convention. Staff Developer/Administrator of proprietary retirement center in
Seattle. BA/Business Administration from University of Washington; design studies
from Seattle University; economics studies from Trinity University.
Otto
"Joe" Vondrak
Became a member
of the Board of Directors in 1998. President of Pacific Crest Construction,
an Oregon Corporation. Pacific Crest is an award-winning general contractor
specializing in single- and multi-family housing, mixed-use, and commercial/retail
construction. Mr. Vondrak and Pacific Crest have directly overseen the
construction of a number of government projects, including projects sponsored
by the Portland Housing Authority, North Clackamas, Sandy, and Portland School
Districts, US Department of Labor, US National Forest, Port of Portland, the
Cities of Beaverton and Hillsboro, Multnomah County and the US Federal Government
(Ninth Circuit Court of Appeals). Mr. Vondrak holds a BS in Forestry from
Oregon State University and lives in Gresham, Oregon.
James
G. Edwards
Became a member
of the Shelem Board of Directors in 1999. Mr. Edwards was the Executive
Director of Willamette View, Inc., a Methodist-sponsored Continuing Care Retirement
Community (CCRC) located in Milwaukie, Oregon, prior to his retirement in 1999.
Willamette View, with 550 residents and over 300 employees, is one of the largest
CCRCs in Oregon. During his tenure, Willamette View invested $23 million
in the addition of over 100 apartments and extensive building modernization,
including seismic upgrades, established a foundation with assets and trust accounts
of over $18 million, received three national awards, was the first CCRC in the
State of Oregon with a bank branch. Mr. Edwards also completed the planning
and design for an $18 million campus expansion that is currently under construction.
He was named National Administrator of the Year by the Health and Welfare Ministries
Division of the United Methodist Church, First Citizen by the North Clackamas
County Chamber of Commerce, and Churchman of the Year by the Christian Church
(Disciples of Christ) in Oregon. In addition, he is past president or
past chair of The Oregon Association of Homes for the Aging, Milwaukie Rotary
Club, The North Clackamas County Chamber of Commerce, the Providence Milwaukie
Hospital Board of Directors, and the Oregon Senior and Disabled Services Division's
Continuing Care Retirement Community Advisory Council. Mr. Edwards completed
his undergraduate work at Northwest Christian College in Eugene, Oregon and
earned a Master of Divinity degree at Texas Christian University.
